Potassium sulfide

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Potassium sulfide is a special inorganic compound. It has the chemical formula K2S. This substance is a colorless solid. You do not see it very often in its pure form. This is because it reacts quickly with water. Most people use the name to mean a mixture. This mixture contains potassium hydrosulfide and potassium hydroxide.

There is a specific way the parts fit together. This is called an antifluorite structure. In this shape, small K+ ions sit in tetrahedral sites. These sites are the same as the F- sites in fluorite. Larger S2- ions sit in the eight-coordinate sites. Other things like Li2S and Na2S crystallize in a similar way. The structure is a neat pattern of small and large parts.

Scientists have many ways to make this compound. One way is to use heat. You can heat K2SO4 with carbon, which is also called coke. This process creates K2S and CO. In a lab, you can make pure K2S another way. You can react potassium with sulfur in anhydrous ammonia. This is a very specific way to prepare it.

This substance is very basic. Because of this, it undergoes a process called hydrolysis in water. This means it changes completely and cannot go back. The K2S reacts with H2O to become KOH and KSH. This reaction is often not a big problem. The mix of SH- and OH- acts as a source of S2-. Other alkali metal sulfides act in a similar way.

Potassium sulfides are very useful for bright displays. They form when black powder is burned. These chemicals are important intermediates for pyrotechnic effects. They help create some glitter formulations. They are also used in senko hanabi fireworks. This makes the night sky look wonderful.
