Potassium sulfide

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Potassium sulfide is a special kind of solid.

Сульфид калия
Сульфид калия

It is a colorless powder. It is hard to find in its pure form. This is because it reacts with water. When it hits water, it changes. It turns into two other things. These are potassium hydroxide and potassium hydrosulfide. Most people use the term to mean this mix of things.

Scientists can make this powder in a lab. They can also make it with heat. They heat potassium sulfate with carbon. This makes the powder.

This substance is useful for fireworks. It forms when black powder burns. It helps make glitter effects in the sky. It is also used in senko hanabi fireworks.

The parts of the powder fit together in a set way. This is called an antifluorite structure. In this shape, small parts sit in tiny holes. Larger parts sit in bigger spots. Other things like sodium sulfide have a similar shape.
