physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Calcium sulfide is a white material. It forms tiny cubes. These cubes look like rock salt. This salt is very special. It can glow in the dark. It glows a deep red color. This glow can last for one hour after the light is gone.

Scientists can find this salt in space. It is in some meteorites. These are rocks that fall from space. A rare mineral called oldhamite is a form of this salt. It helps us study the solar nebula. The solar nebula is a giant cloud of dust and gas.

This salt can also be made in coal dumps. In the past, it was made in a way called the Leblanc process. This was a way to make sodium carbonate. Back then, it was a waste product. Millions of tons were thrown away. This caused much pollution.

Calcium sulfide can react with water. It breaks down when it touches water or moist air. This can let out a gas. The gas is hydrogen sulfide. It has a very bad smell. This salt also reacts with acid. It lets out the same smelly gas. This gas can be toxic.
