language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Lime sulfur is a special liquid used in gardening. It is a reddish-yellow color. It also has a strong smell like rotten eggs. People use it to keep plants healthy. It can stop bugs, germs, and fungi.

This liquid has a very long history. It may be the first man-made chemical used to stop pests. In the 1840s, people in France used it on grape vines. Later, in 1886, it was used in California. By the 1920s, many orchards used it to protect their crops.

Some people use it for art. Bonsai fans use it on tiny trees. They paint it on dead wood. This makes the wood look white and old. They must be very careful not to touch the green leaves.

You must stay safe when using it. It is very strong. It can burn skin or cause blindness if it hits your eyes. Always wear gloves and goggles. It can even hurt pets if it is not mixed with enough water first.
