It is made of calcium and fluorine. In nature, it is a mineral called fluorite. Pure fluorite is clear. But it often has many bright colors. This happens because of tiny bits of other things inside.

This mineral is very useful. It helps make aluminum and steel. In metal making, it acts as a flux. A flux is a substance that cleans metal. It helps remove bad parts to make the metal better. Calcium fluoride also helps make cement. It makes the work more efficient by lowering melting points.

We use it for special glass and lenses too. These parts can see ultraviolet and infrared light. This light is hard for us to see. Because of this, it is used in telescopes. It is also used in thermal imaging systems.

You might find it in dental products. It helps make tooth enamel strong. This helps stop decay. Some people use it in medical tools. It can be used in dosimeters. These are tools that measure heat.
