In nature, you can find it as a mineral called fluorite. It is also known as fluorspar. While pure samples are clear, the mineral often has deep colors. These colors come from tiny impurities inside the crystal. It is very hard to dissolve this substance in water. This makes it a very steady material to work with.

The way the atoms fit together is quite special. It forms a cubic shape called a fluorite structure. In this shape, calcium atoms sit in the middle of a cube. Eight fluorine atoms surround them. Each fluorine atom is also connected to four calcium atoms. This pattern looks like a shape called a tetrahedron. This same structure can be found in many other ionic compounds.

People use this mineral to make many important things. It is a main source for making hydrogen fluoride. To do this, workers treat the mineral with sulfuric acid. This reaction creates a new solid and a gas. High purity calcium fluoride is made by treating calcium carbonate with hydrofluoric acid. This process creates carbon dioxide and water as well.

Calcium fluoride has many jobs in science and industry. It is used to make special lenses and windows. These parts can see ultraviolet and infrared light. Because of this, they are used in telescopes and thermal imaging systems. It is also used as a flux in making steel and aluminum. A flux helps remove impurities to make the metal better. It even helps make cement more energy efficient by lowering melting points.

You might see this mineral in your own home. It is used in dental products to strengthen tooth enamel. This helps prevent decay in your teeth. It is also used in paints to make them bright and durable. Some special glass and ceramics use it to stay strong. Even in medicine, it can be used in tools called dosimeters. These tools help measure heat through a process called thermoluminescence.
