It is made of potassium and aluminium. In water, it can grow into crystals. These crystals often have eight sides. This shape is called an octahedron.

People have used alum for a very long time. Ancient Egyptians used it to clean cloudy water. In Mesopotamia, people used it for making glass. They also used it to tan leather. In India and China, it was used in medicine.

Alum helps many things work today. It helps dyes stay on cloth. This helps colors stay bright. It is also used in baking powder. Some people use it on their skin. It can stop small cuts from bleeding after shaving.

In the past, making alum was hard work. In England, workers used shale to make it. This helped start the Industrial Revolution. They had to burn shale for many months. This work changed the land. It even made the air and water dirty.
