This substance is a salt made from nitric acid. It can be found in nature as a mineral called niter.

Some niter grows on cave walls. It can also come from bat droppings.

People use potassium nitrate for many things. It is a source of nitrogen, which helps plants grow. Farmers use it as a fertilizer. It is also used to help remove tree stumps. In the past, it was a main part of black powder. Black powder is a type of gunpowder. Potassium nitrate acts as an oxidizer. An oxidizer is something that helps things burn. This makes it great for fireworks and rockets.

It is even used with food. It is added to meats like salami and ham. It reacts with the meat to keep it a red color.

Scientists can also make it in labs. They can mix ammonium nitrate with potassium chloride to make it. This is a modern way to produce it.
