Long ago, people made potash from wood ashes. They soaked the ashes in water. Then they boiled the water in large pots. This left a white powder behind. This was the main way to make it for a long time.

Today, we get potash from the ground. Most of it comes from ancient oceans. Long ago, seawater filled large inland areas. When the water dried up, the salts stayed behind. These salts turned into beds of potash ore.

We use different ways to get it. Some mines go deep underground. These are called shaft mines. They can go 4,400 feet down. Other mines use a set of steps called dissolution. Workers pump hot water into the potash. This dissolves the salt. Then they pump the liquid to the surface.
