It is called an evaporite. This means it forms when water dries up. This can happen in a sea or a salty basin. As the water leaves, the salt stays behind.

Carnallite can be many colors. It can be white, yellow, or red. Sometimes it is even blue. It can look like a big mass or tiny fibers. It has a very bitter taste.

This mineral is a great source of two things. It provides potassium and magnesium. Farmers use it to make fertilizer. This helps plants grow well. In Russia, it is the main source of magnesium.

Carnallite is deliquescent. This means it absorbs moisture from the air. It can soak up so much water that it turns into a liquid! Because of this, you must keep it in an airtight container.

People find carnallite in many places. It is in New Mexico and Colorado. It is also in Germany and Russia. In Israel and Jordan, people use large pans to make it. They let the water dry up to get the salt.
