This mineral has a silvery white color. It is opaque, which means light cannot pass through it. It often grows in long, thin shapes called prisms. Sometimes, two crystals grow together in a way called twinning.

Loellingite is quite heavy for its size. It has a high specific gravity. This means it feels much heavier than other rocks. It is also quite hard. On a scale called Mohs hardness, it scores a 5.5 to 6.

If you heat this mineral, something cool happens. It becomes magnetic. This means it will pull on a magnet.

People first found this mineral in 1845. They found it in the Lölling district in Austria. That is how it got its name. It is often found near other minerals. It can be found with bismuth or calcite. It can also be found in pegmatites. These are types of rock.
