Boracite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Boracite is a special mineral. It is made of magnesium and boron. Its name comes from the boron inside it. Boracite can have many colors. It can be blue or green. It can also be gray, yellow, or white.

This mineral is very hard. It has a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5. This means it can scratch other things. Boracite does not dissolve in water. This is different from borax. Borax is a mineral that melts in water.

Sometimes, boracite looks like a cube. This happens when the mineral cools down. It starts as an unstable form at high heat. As it cools, it changes shape. You can often find boracite inside other crystals. It grows inside gypsum and anhydrite. It is also found near salt rocks like halite.

People first found boracite in 1789. They found it at Kalkberg hill in Germany. You can also find it in New Brunswick, Canada. It is a very interesting find for scientists.
