Adolf von Baeyer was a famous German chemist.

He spent his life studying how tiny parts of matter work together. His work helped people make new colors and medicines. He is best known for his work with organic chemistry. This is the study of the building blocks of life. He also created a way to name complex shapes in chemistry. These names help scientists all over the world talk to each other. His discoveries changed how the chemical industry works today.

Baeyer worked with many different things in his lab. One of his biggest jobs was making indigo. Indigo is a deep blue dye that comes from plants. He figured out how to make this dye using chemicals.

He also discovered phenolphthalein. This is a substance that changes color in different liquids. He studied how atoms form rings, which he called cyclic compounds. He even found barbituric acid. This helped lead to the making of certain medicines. He also studied how things like phenol and formaldehyde react together.

Baeyer loved science even when he was a little boy.

He started doing experiments in Berlin when he was only nine. On his 13th birthday, he bought a piece of indigo for two Thalers. This was the start of his life's work. He studied at Berlin University to learn math and physics. Later, he went to the University of Heidelberg. There, he worked with a famous chemist named August Kekulé. He finished his doctorate by studying a chemical called arsenic methyl chloride.

Many important things happened during his long career.

In 1871, he made synthetic fluorescein, which is a bright pigment. In 1875, he became a professor at the University of Munich. He won the Davy Medal in London in 1881. King Ludwig II of Bavaria made him a noble in 1885.

This gave him the title "von" before his name. The biggest honor came in 1905 when he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He lived to be 81 years old and died in 1917.

We see Baeyer's work in many places today. His names are used in science, like the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation.

If you see a bright dye or certain medicines, his work might be involved. Even the moon carries his name. There is a crater on the moon called the von Baeyer crater. He was also a very famous teacher. He taught organic chemistry to students for many years. His ideas about how atoms pull on each other are still used by scientists today.
