Organic reaction

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Organic reactions are ways that organic compounds change to form something new. These changes are very important for our world. We use these reactions to build man-made chemicals like drugs and plastics. They also help us create food additives and fabrics.

Scientists use these steps to build new organic molecules. Without these reactions, we could not make many things we use every day.

There are different ways these reactions work. In polar reactions, electron pairs move from a source to a sink. This movement changes the charge of the atoms involved.

Radical reactions are different because they involve single electrons. These are called radicals. Finally, pericyclic reactions involve bonds moving in a cycle. In these, electrons move around a ring without a single start or end point.

People have studied these changes for a long time. The oldest organic reactions include burning organic fuels. Another old one is making soap from fats, called saponification. Modern organic chemistry really began with the Wöhler synthesis in 1828. Since then, many people have discovered new ways to change molecules.

Scientists often give special names to reactions. These are called named reactions, and there are about 1,000 of them. They are often named after the person who found them. For example, the Claisen rearrangement was named in 1912. Some names are very long, like the Corey–House–Posner–Whitesides reaction. Scientists often use short codes for these long names to work faster.

Many important discoveries won Nobel Prizes. These include the Grignard reaction in 1912 and the Wittig reaction in 1979.

These reactions link to many things you see in life. When two things combine and a small molecule like water splits off, it is a condensation reaction. If water is used up in a reaction, it is called hydrolysis.

Many reactions also lead to polymerization. This is how we make large structures like plastics. Understanding these steps helps us understand how the world is built at a tiny level.
