Aliphatic compound

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Scientists group certain tiny building blocks called hydrocarbons into two main classes. One group is called aromatic compounds. The other group is called aliphatic compounds.

Hydrocarbons are made only of carbon and hydrogen. Aliphatic compounds can be shaped like long chains or closed rings. Some chains are straight. Other chains are branched like a tree.

If a chain has no rings at all, it is always aliphatic. Even some rings are aliphatic if they are not aromatic.

These compounds work in different ways based on their bonds. We call them saturated if they have only single bonds. These are known as alkanes.

Ethan Lewis

They are called saturated because they are full of hydrogen. Some compounds are unsaturated. This means they have double bonds or triple bonds. Compounds with double bonds are called alkenes.

Those with triple bonds are called alkynes.

If other elements like oxygen or nitrogen join the chain, it is no longer a hydrocarbon.

Finding these molecules helps us understand how the world is built. Methane is the simplest aliphatic compound.

It has only one carbon atom. Scientists study many different types of these structures. They look at alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes. They also study cyclic versions like cyclohexane.

Even strange shapes like cubane are part of this group. These shapes show how carbon can connect in many ways.

There are many specific names for these compounds. Methane is an alkane. Acetylene is an alkyne. Ethylene is an alkene.

Propane and butane are also alkanes. Pentane and hexane follow them in size.

Larger ones include octane and decane. Some special ones include limonene and squalene.

Each name tells us how many carbon atoms are present.

Most aliphatic compounds are flammable. This means they can burn easily. We use this property to power our lives every day. Methane is found in natural gas for stoves and heating.

Butane is used in torches and lighters. We use liquid fuels like petrol and diesel for cars. Jet fuel is also made from these hydrocarbons. Even acetylene is used for welding. These tiny molecules help us move and cook.
