Elemental analysis

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Scientists use elemental analysis to learn about the world. This process studies what things are made of. They might look at soil or drinking water. They can also study minerals and bodily fluids.

This work is part of analytical chemistry. This field uses tools to find the chemical nature of things. Scientists use it to see what elements are present. This is called qualitative analysis. They also want to know how much of an element exists. This is called quantitative analysis.

One common way to do this is combustion analysis. This is a way to find elements by burning a sample.

For organic chemists, this is often called CHNX analysis. They look for carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and heteroatoms like sulfur or halogens. This helps them find the structure of an unknown compound. It also shows if a new compound is pure. Scientists look at the ratio of elements to find a chemical formula. The results should be very close to the calculated formula. An accepted difference is only 0.3%.

History shows how these tools have changed over time. Antoine Lavoisier is the inventor of this tool. He used it as a quantitative tool to check compounds.

In the past, it used absorbent materials to catch gases. This was done through a method called gravimetric determination. This involved measuring weights before and after gases were caught. Today, we use fully automated systems instead. These modern machines use infrared spectroscopy to detect gases. Some use thermal conductivity to find what is in the sample.

There are many ways to measure these tiny parts. Gravimetry is one method where a sample is dissolved. Then, the element of interest is precipitated or turned into gas. Another way is optical atomic spectroscopy. This method probes the outer electronic structure of atoms. Some machines use a flame or a graphite furnace. There is also neutron activation analysis. This involves a process called neutron capture. This makes the sample emit gamma rays. These rays help identify the specific radioisotopes present.

Elemental analysis helps us understand many things we see every day. It is used in materials science to check new substances. It can also be used to check the purity of chemicals.

Many scientists now use other tools like mass spectrometry. They might also use NMR or chromatography. These are newer ways to find the structure of things. However, elemental analysis still gives very useful information. It remains a key part of how we study chemistry. It helps ensure that what we make is exactly what we intended.
