Analytical chemistry is a special branch of science. It helps us find out what materials are made of.

Scientists use it to identify unknown substances in a mixture. They also measure how much of a substance is present. This can be measured by mass or concentration. It might even be measured by the number of moles. This work is vital for many different fields of study. It helps people in medicine, farming, and even archaeology.

There are many ways to do this work. Some methods are very old and simple. One way is called qualitative analysis. This tells you if a specific thing is there. For example, a flame test can show certain elements.

Another way is quantitative analysis. This measures the exact amount of a substance. One way is gravimetric analysis, which uses weight. You might weigh a sample before and after heating it. Another way is titration. This involves adding a liquid to a solution until a change happens.

History shows us how these tools changed over time. In 1860, Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff developed flame emissive spectrometry.

They used this to discover rubidium and caesium. Later, Justus von Liebig helped develop ways to study elements systematically. Most big changes happened after the year 1900. During the 1970s, scientists began using hybrid techniques. These combine two different tools to study a sample more deeply. This helped the science move from studying small molecules to studying biology.

Modern science uses very powerful machines for analysis. One important tool is mass spectrometry.

This machine uses electric and magnetic fields. It turns a sample into gas ions to measure their mass. Another tool is spectroscopy. This measures how molecules interact with light. Scientists also use chromatography to separate mixtures. In this process, different parts of a mix move at different speeds. This allows scientists to see each part clearly. Some machines are even getting smaller and more automatic.

Analytical chemistry connects to many parts of your life. It is used in the pharmaceutical industry to find new drugs. It also helps ensure the quality of things we buy. Scientists use it to study how drugs work in a patient. It can even help find chemicals in blood that might cause cancer. Today, we use "big data" to understand complex results. This means using computers to look at huge amounts of information. This helps scientists work in ways that are better for our environment.
