A calorimeter is a special tool used to measure heat.

Scientists use it to see how much energy is released or soaked up during a change. This might happen during a chemical reaction or a physical change. Some tools are used to study how much heat a substance can hold. This is called heat capacity. There are many different kinds of these devices. You might see a titration calorimeter or an isothermal micro calorimeter. Each type helps scientists study heat in a different way.

To understand how a simple calorimeter works, think of a thermometer in water.

First, a scientist notes the starting temperature of the liquid. Then, they add two substances together to start a reaction. They must wait until the reaction is totally finished. After that, they record the final temperature. By looking at the temperature change, they can calculate the energy. They use the mass and the specific heat of the liquid to find the answer.

Learning about heat has a long and interesting history.

In 1761, Joseph Black shared the idea of latent heat. This discovery helped lead to the very first ice calorimeters. Later, in 1780, Antoine Lavoisier used a guinea pig to study heat. He saw that the animal's breathing released heat that melted snow. This showed him that breathing is a type of combustion. Lavoisier even gave the device the name "calorimeter" using Greek and Latin roots.

One very strong version is the bomb calorimeter.

This device uses a heavy steel container called a bomb. It is built to withstand huge amounts of pressure. A small sample, often about 1 to 1.5 grams, goes inside. The bomb is filled with extra pure oxygen. Then, electricity is used to ignite the fuel inside. As it burns, the heat moves through the steel walls. This warms up a large volume of water, often 2000 ml.

These tools help us understand the world around us.

In big factories, reaction calorimeters help engineers keep processes at a steady temperature. Some calorimeters, like the Calvet-type, use special sensors to catch heat. These sensors use a ring of thermocouples to measure heat flow. This is helpful because it allows scientists to use larger samples. Whether studying a tiny chemical or a large fuel, calorimeters make the invisible movement of heat easy to see.
