Heat

Heat is a special kind of energy.

It moves when there is a temperature difference between two things. If one area is warm and another is cold, heat will cross the boundary. Scientists often use the word heat to talk about the energy inside a system. This energy is part of what we call internal energy. We can see this energy by checking the temperature. In science, we measure heat using a unit called the joule.

Engineers sometimes use other units like the calorie or the British thermal unit. The rate at which something heats up is measured in watts.

Today, we understand heat through the motion of tiny particles.

Everything is made of small parts that are always moving. When these particles move very fast, the object feels hot. When they move slowly, the object feels cold. Heat is not a thing that sits still inside an object. Instead, heat is the energy that moves because of particle motion. This movement can happen through conduction or through radiation. This way of thinking is called the mechanical theory of heat. It explains how energy moves from one place to another.

People have wondered about heat for a very long time.

In the 1600s, thinkers like Francis Bacon and Galileo Galilei studied it. Bacon believed that heat and motion were the same thing. Galileo thought heat was something our minds perceive because of moving particles. Later, Robert Hooke and Robert Boyle also wrote about this motion. For a long time, people thought heat might be a special kind of matter. They used ideas like the caloric theory to explain it. Eventually, scientists realized that the mechanical theory was the correct way to see it.

Joseph Black was a very important scientist who studied heat deeply.

In 1760, he discovered that different substances hold heat differently. He called this specific heat capacity. For example, he found that mercury has less capacity for heat than water. Black also discovered something called latent heat. This is heat used to change a solid into a liquid.

He noticed that melting ice needs more heat than just raising its temperature. This heat is used for the phase change instead of a temperature change. His work helped us understand how energy works in nature.

We can use special tools to see how heat works in real life.

One tool is called a calorimeter. It is used to measure how much heat is absorbed or released. In 1780, Antoine Lavoisier used a calorimeter to study breathing. He used an ice calorimeter to see how much heat was released in chemical reactions. This is similar to how we use a thermometer to see temperature changes. You might notice heat when you feel the sun on your skin. You also feel it when a warm cup of cocoa warms your hands. All of these are examples of energy moving through the world.
