Heat is a form of energy.

It moves when there is a temperature difference. Heat moves from warm areas to cold areas. Scientists today say heat is the motion of tiny particles.

These particles make up everything. When they move fast, things feel hot. When they move slow, things feel cold.

In the past, people had different ideas. Some thought heat was a special kind of matter. A scientist named Joseph Black studied this deeply.

He found that different things hold heat in different ways. This is called specific heat capacity. For example, water holds heat differently than mercury.

Black also found something called latent heat. This is heat used to change a state of matter. A state of matter is how something looks, like solid ice or liquid water.

When ice melts, it uses heat to change. This does not always change the temperature right away. Scientists use a tool called a calorimeter to measure heat.

This tool helps them see how much heat is used or let out.
