A thermometer is a tool used to measure temperature. Temperature is just a way to describe how hot or cold something is.

These devices are very important in our world today. Doctors use them to check if a person is sick. Scientists use them to study the Earth and space. They are also used in big factories and in weather stations.

To work, a thermometer needs two main parts. First, it needs a sensor to feel the heat. This could be a glass bulb filled with liquid. It could also be a special sensor that uses infrared light.

Second, it needs a way to show a number. A mercury thermometer uses a visible scale marked on the glass. An infrared thermometer uses a digital readout on a screen. The sensor detects a change, and the device turns that change into a number.

It is hard to say who first invented the thermometer. Many people helped make it better over a long time. In the 3rd century BC, Philo of Byzantium showed how air could move liquid.

Later, Galileo Galilei and Santorio Santorio worked on early versions. These early tools were called thermoscopes. They showed if heat changed, but they did not have numbers. Santorio Santorio showed the first version with a scale in 1625.

Making a standard scale was a big challenge for scientists. The Roman physician Galen had ideas about using degrees of heat. In 1714, Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit made a very reliable thermometer. He used mercury instead of water or alcohol.

In 1742, Anders Celsius proposed a scale using zero and 100. Later, Sir Thomas Clifford Allbutt made a medical thermometer in 1866. His tool could give a body temperature reading in just five minutes.

We use thermometers in many parts of our lives. You might see a digital one at a doctor's office.

Some thermometers are "registering" tools. This means they can hold a temperature reading even after you move them. Other tools are "non-registering." These tools change their reading immediately when the temperature around them changes. We use different kinds depending on the job we need to do.
