Temperature is a way to measure how hot or cold something is.

It is a number that tells us about energy. Everything is made of tiny particles like atoms and molecules. These particles are always moving or shaking. Temperature reflects the average kinetic energy of these particles. Kinetic energy is just the energy of motion. When particles move or collide quickly, the temperature goes up. When they move slowly, the temperature goes down.

Measuring temperature follows a specific way it works. We use a tool called a thermometer to find the number. Many thermometers are empirical, which means they use physical changes. For example, a mercury thermometer uses a glass tube. As things get warmer, the liquid inside the tube expands. This expansion moves the liquid up the tube to show a higher number. Some materials even contract, or get smaller, when they get warmer.

People have used different scales for a long time. The Celsius scale is used in most of the world. It was once called the centigrade scale. In this scale, water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius. It boils at 100 degrees Celsius at sea level. The Fahrenheit scale is common in the United States. Scientists prefer the Kelvin scale for their work.

The Kelvin scale is an absolute scale. This means it does not rely on a specific substance to work. Its zero point is called absolute zero. This is the lowest temperature possible in the universe. At absolute zero, all classical motion of particles stops. Scientists say it is 0 K, which is -273.15 °C. We can get very close to this point in labs. However, we can never actually reach it.

Temperature affects almost everything in our world. It changes how fast chemical reactions happen. It also changes the speed of sound in a gas. Even the weather and the Earth's science depend on it. Living things like humans also have body temperatures.

Temperature can even change if a material is a solid, a liquid, or a gas. Understanding these numbers helps us study everything from tiny atoms to huge stars.
