Thermocouple

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A thermocouple is a clever tool used to measure temperature. It is an electrical device made of two different metal wires. These wires meet at two separate points called junctions. One is the measuring junction, which is often called the hot junction. The other is the reference junction, or the cold junction.

These sensors are very useful in our world. They are inexpensive and can be swapped out easily. They work well because they can measure a huge range of temperatures.

This tool works through something called the Seebeck effect. This effect happens when there is a temperature difference between the two junctions. When the wires are at different temperatures, they create a tiny voltage. This voltage is usually very small, often in the microvolt range.

The amount of voltage depends on the types of metal wires used. To find the real temperature, you must know the temperature at the reference junction too. Some people use an ice bath at 0 °C to keep it steady. Others use a second sensor to measure the reference junction temperature.

We can trace this discovery back to the year 1821. A German physicist named Thomas Johann Seebeck found it. He noticed a magnetic needle moved near a circuit of two different metals. This happened when one part of the metal was heated. At first, he called this strange result thermo-magnetism. Later, people learned the magnetic field came from a thermo-electric current.

Thermocouples are used in many places every day. In big industries, they measure heat in diesel engines and gas turbines. They are also used in kilns to check very high heat. You can find them in your own home, too. They act as temperature sensors in thermostats. They also work as flame sensors in gas-powered appliances to keep them safe.

Using these tools can sometimes be a hard job. It is difficult to get them to be perfectly accurate. Errors of less than one degree Celsius are hard to avoid. This can happen because of how the metal is made. It can also happen because the wires change as they get old. This is called aging, and it happens after long use at high heat.
