An electric stove is a tool used to cook and bake food.

It uses electricity to create heat for your meals. These stoves became popular as a way to replace wood or coal stoves. Older stoves required much more labor to operate and maintain. Today, some modern stoves even include built-in extractor hoods. Most stoves have one or more burners to heat pots.

These burners are also called heating elements.

There are a few different ways these stoves work. Some use resistive heating coils to make heat. Early models used these coils to heat up iron hotplates. Later, engineers made composite heating elements. These consist of resistive wires inside hollow metal tubes. These tubes are packed with a material called magnesite. The tubes are often arranged in a spiral shape. This shape allows the element to support your cookware directly.

Some modern stoves use a smooth glass-ceramic top. This material lets heat pass through very well.

People have been working on electric cooking for a long time. In 1859, George B. Simpson was awarded a patent for an electro-heater. It used a platinum-wire coil powered by batteries. In 1892, Thomas Ahearn filed a patent for an electric oven. He likely used it at an Ottawa hotel that year. In 1905, David Curle Smith created the Kalgoorlie Stove in Australia.

His design featured an oven with a hotplate on top. This layout is very similar to most stoves used today.

History shows that electric stoves were slow to become common. Many people found the new technology to be unfamiliar. In the early days, electricity was expensive to buy. The heating elements also did not last very long. Things improved when inventors created a metal alloy called nichrome. This new metal made the heating parts much more durable. By the 1930s, the cost of power went down. This helped more families accept electric stoves in their kitchens.

You might see different kinds of electric stoves in homes today. Some use an induction method to cook food.

Induction stoves use electromagnetic induction to create heat. You must use ferromagnetic cookware for these stoves to work. This means the pans must be able to work with magnets. Other stoves use halogen lamps or coils under a glass top. A single heating element might use 1 to 3 kW of electricity. This is the same kind of power used for many home appliances.
