A multimeter is a very useful tool for studying electricity. It is a single device that can measure many different electrical properties. Most common meters measure voltage, resistance, and current.

Some special meters can even measure temperature or capacitance. A technician might use one to check if a circuit is working correctly. They can also test small parts to see if they match their official rules.

These tools come in many shapes and sizes. You can find small ones you hold in your hand. You can also find large, highly-precise instruments that sit on a workbench.

There are two main ways these tools show you information. An analog multimeter uses a moving pointer to show a reading on a scale.

A digital multimeter, or DMM, shows numbers on a screen instead. Digital meters are usually more precise than the analog kind.

To use the tool, you connect it to a circuit using probes. These probes touch the device you are testing. Most meters have safety features to protect the person using them. This is important if the voltage is higher than the meter can handle.

Long ago, measuring electricity was a much harder job. In 1890, people used a device called a galvanometer to detect current.

These early tools were bulky and very delicate. They were also quite slow to use in the field. To measure things, scientists had to use a Wheatstone bridge to compare unknown values to a known one. Later, the D'Arsonval–Weston meter used a moving coil to make reading much easier. This allowed people to read values directly from a scale.

A British engineer named Donald Macadie changed how work was done. He worked for the Post Office and found it hard to carry many separate tools.

He invented a tool that could measure amperes, volts, and ohms. He called this invention the Avometer. The first Avometer was put on sale in 1923. It had three ranges for direct current and three ranges for direct voltage. One version could measure up to 1,200 volts.

His company, ACWEECO, was set up to make these meters.

Today, multimeters are much more advanced than the early models. The first digital multimeter was made in 1955 by Non Linear Systems. Later, in 1977, Frank Bishop made the first handheld digital version.

Modern meters can do many extra tasks. They can check if a path is complete by using a buzzer. Some can even measure things like light or how much sound is in the air. You can even use adapters to measure very high voltages or very large currents. This makes the multimeter a key tool for almost any electrical job.
