Thermocouple

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A thermocouple is a tool used to measure heat. It is made of two different metal wires. These wires join at two points. One point is the measuring junction. This is the part that feels the heat. The other point is the reference junction.

When there is a temperature difference between the two points, it makes power. This is called the Seebeck effect. The power is a tiny amount of voltage. Scientists can use this voltage to find the temperature.

To get a right answer, you must know the temperature at the reference junction. Some people use an ice bath to keep it at 0 °C. Others use a second sensor to measure it.

Thermocouples are very useful. They work in homes and in big factories. They can check gas flames or hot engines. They are cheap and can measure very high or very low heat. However, they are not always perfect. It can be hard to make them very accurate.
