Transducer

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A transducer is a tool that changes energy. It turns one kind of signal into another. This way of changing energy is called transduction.

Some transducers are sensors. A sensor feels a signal from the world. It then makes a signal to share that info. Other tools are called actuators. An actuator uses a signal to move something. It can use power like heat or air.

Some tools work in both ways. An antenna is one example. It can catch radio waves to make an electrical signal. It can also send electrical signals out as waves. A voice coil does this too. It helps a loudspeaker make sound. It also helps a microphone catch sound.

There are two main types of transducers. Passive ones need extra power to work. A thermistor needs a current to work. Active ones make their own power. A photodiode makes power from light.

Scientists use many rules to rate these tools. They look at dynamic range. This is the gap between the smallest and largest signal. A larger range means the tool is more sensitive.
