Transducer

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some tools change one kind of power to another.

These tools are called transducers. They can turn light into a signal. They can turn sound into a signal, too.

A sensor is a tool that feels things. It can feel heat or light. Then it sends a signal. This signal tells us what is happening.

An actuator is a tool that moves. It uses a signal to start moving. It can move things in a system.

Some tools work both ways. An antenna can catch radio waves. It can also send them out. A speaker works this way, too. It turns signals into sound. A microphone turns sound into signals. These tools help us talk and listen.
