A sensor is a device that feels changes in the world. It takes a signal, like heat or light, and turns it into electricity. This electrical signal lets a computer know what is happening.

Sensors help many machines work. Some sensors feel a touch. You might use these on an elevator button. Other sensors feel light. These can make a lamp grow bright.

Some sensors are very small. We call these microsensors. They are made using a way called MEMS technology. These tiny tools work very fast. They are also very sensitive. Sensitivity means how much the signal changes when the world changes. For example, a thermometer shows how much the heat changes.

There are also chemical sensors. These tools find what is in a liquid or a gas. They use two steps. First, they find a specific chemical. This is called recognition. Next, they turn that find into a signal. This second step is called transduction.

Some special sensors are called biosensors. These use parts of living things, like cells or proteins, to work.
