A numerical relay is a smart computer tool.

It keeps electric power systems safe. It works by watching for electrical faults. A fault is a mistake in the power flow.

First, the relay takes in small signals. These signals show the voltage and current. It uses a part called an analog-to-digital converter. This part turns the signals into digital data. The relay then uses math to study this data. It can check things like power and phase angles.

Next, the relay uses protection algorithms. These are sets of rules that tell the relay what to do. An engineer or a maker sets these rules. If the relay sees a fault, it acts fast. It sends a signal to trip a circuit breaker. This stops the bad power from moving.

Old relays were different. They used magnets and springs to work. They could only do one or two jobs. One new numerical relay can do many jobs at once. It can also record what happened during a fault. It can even talk to computers far away. This helps people study the power system.
