Most touchpads use capacitive sensing. This is a way to sense touch using electricity. Your finger changes the electrical field on the pad. Because of this, the pad knows where you touch. It can also feel how you move. This moves the cursor on your screen.

Some touchpads have physical buttons next to them. Other pads are called clickpads. A clickpad uses software to act like a button. You can tap the surface to click. You can also use two fingers to scroll. This helps you move up or down a page.

Some pads have special spots called hotspots. You can use the edge of the pad to scroll. This works like a scroll wheel. Some pads can even sense five fingers at once. This is called multitouch. It lets you do many things at once.
