A touchpad is a helpful tool used to move a pointer on a screen.

It is a type of pointing device with a flat surface. This surface detects where your fingers are and how they move. It then turns those movements into motion on your computer screen. You will see touchpads on almost all laptop computers today. Most desktop computers use a mouse instead of a touchpad. However, some people use trackpads on desks if they do not have much room.

Most touchpads work using a method called capacitive sensing. This happens when your finger touches the pad and changes the electrical field. Because your body can conduct electricity, the pad senses that change. This allows the device to know your exact position. It will not work with a pencil or a gloved finger. This is because those items do not conduct electricity the same way. To move a cursor, you slide your finger across the surface. This creates a relative motion that moves the pointer on your display.

People have been working on this technology for a long time. In 1980, a company named Xerox made one of the first touchpads. It was part of a system called the Xerox 860. They called their circular touchpad the "Cat." Later, in 1983, the Gavilan SC became the first battery-powered laptop with a touchpad. By 1994, Cirque introduced the GlidePoint, which was a widely available touchpad. That same year, Apple used this technology in the PowerBook 500 series. Apple began calling their version a "trackpad" to tell it apart from others.

There are many different kinds of touchpads used in devices. Some have physical buttons next to the pad for clicking. Others are called clickpads, which use software to sense a click. Some modern touchpads use multitouch to sense up to five fingers at once. You can use two fingers to scroll through a page. Some devices even have "hotspots" on the edges for special tasks. For example, sliding a finger along an edge can act like a scroll wheel. Even some smartphones, like the BlackBerry Curve, have used small trackpads.

Touchpads are a great way to control computers without needing much space. They are much smaller than a traditional mouse. This makes them perfect for portable devices like laptops or media players. Some touchpads are even built into keyboards for special uses. You can find them on music players like the iPod Classic or the Zune. Even the newest iPhone 16 uses a special one-dimensional trackpad. This new part is called Camera Control to help people take better photos. It uses sensors to tell if you are pressing hard or sliding gently.
