Input device

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

An input device is a special tool used to talk to a computer.

These tools allow people to enter data and control signals into a system. Without them, we could not tell a computer what to do. There are many different kinds of devices for this job. Some move things on a screen, while others capture sound or light. They help us turn our physical actions into digital information.

Many devices work by following a specific way it works. A keyboard uses a matrix of buttons called keys to enter text. When you press a key, it sends a signal to the computer. Some keyboards use mechanical switches with springs to feel the press. Others use a membrane or scissor switches to stay thin.

A mouse is a pointing device that tracks movement across a surface. It sends spatial data so you can select items on a screen. You can use direct input, like a touchscreen, or indirect input, like a mouse.

People have used different tools to talk to computers for a long time. In the 20th century, people used punched cards and punched tapes. These used holes to represent ones and zeros for the computer to read.

Today, we have much more advanced tools like digital cameras and webcams. We also use sensors that can be microscopic in size. These tiny sensors are called MEMS, which stands for micro-electromechanical systems. They allow our small mobile devices to sense the world around them.

There are many specific names for these tools and their jobs. A sensor like an accelerometer detects when a device is speeding up. A gyroscope senses how a device is turned in space. A magnetometer works like a compass to find a magnetic heading.

Other sensors include barometers for air pressure and thermometers for heat. Some devices are composite, meaning they combine many tools into one. A gaming controller is a composite device because it has buttons and sticks. A mouse is also a composite device because it tracks movement and clicks.

Input devices connect our world to the digital world. You use a touchpad on a laptop just like you use a mouse on a desk. When you speak into a microphone, you are using audio input. A camera turns a real scene into a digital video file.

Even the way you hold a phone uses sensors to know its direction. These tools make it possible to play games, draw, and communicate. They turn our human movements into something a computer can understand.
