Measurement is a way to find the exact size of an object or an event.

It works by comparing something unknown to a known standard. For example, you might compare a piece of string to a ruler. This process helps us understand how large or small things are. Scientists and engineers use these comparisons to study the world. Measurement is also very important for trade and business. It ensures that people buy and sell things fairly.

When we measure, we look at several different things. We look at the type of measurement and its magnitude. Magnitude is the number we get from a tool. We also use a unit to give that number meaning. A unit is a standard amount used for comparison. We must also consider uncertainty in our results. Uncertainty shows how much we can trust a measurement. It accounts for small errors that happen during the process. Scientists repeat measurements to make sure they are accurate.

People have used different measurement systems for a long time. In the past, people made local agreements to trade fairly. Many different systems existed all over the world. Since the 18th century, people have worked to create one system. The International System of Units, or SI, is the modern standard. This system was developed in 1960 from the MKS system. It helps everyone use the same math for science. The General Conference on Weights and Measures oversees these standards. This group was established in 1875 by the Metre Convention.

The SI system uses seven very important base units. These units are the kilogram, metre, second, ampere, kelvin, candela, and mole.

These units do not rely on a physical object. Instead, they are tied to unchanging laws of nature. For example, the metre is defined by the speed of light. In 1983, the CGPM redefined the metre this way. The kilogram was redefined in 2019 using the Planck constant. This makes the measurements very steady and reliable. It means the units will not change over time.

Not everyone uses the SI system for everything. The United States uses U.S. customary units for many tasks. The United Kingdom uses some imperial units, like miles for road signs.

People in Britain might use pints to measure milk. In many places, people still use acres to measure land. Different tools are used for different jobs in life. A carpenter might use a two-metre rule for length.

A scale is used to measure mass or weight. Mass is how much matter is in an object. Weight is the force of gravity pulling on that mass.
