Size

Size tells us how big or small a thing is. We can talk about size in many different ways. Geometrical size looks at length, area, or volume. Length can include width, height, or diameter.

We can also measure size using mass. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. This is different from weight. Weight is the force an object feels from gravity. On Earth, a 1.0 kilogram mass weighs about 9.81 newtons. That weight changes on other planets like Mars or Saturn.

How do we know how big things are? Most people use their eyes to judge size. We often compare a new object to something familiar. You might look at a finch egg next to a dime.

Our eyes also use binocular vision for depth perception. This helps us guess the size of distant objects. We can even use sound to find size. People who cannot see well use echoes to sense a space. This is called echolocation. We can also use touch, which is called haptic perception.

Scientists use special tools to see the world clearly. Some things are too small for our eyes. A microscope helps us see these tiny objects. Other things are too huge to see at once. A telescope helps us look at far things in space.

We can also use math to find size. We use known points to guess the size of huge things. This is called extrapolation. Even very advanced tools have a limited field of view. We must work carefully to understand the true scale of the universe.

There are many words to describe how big things are. We often use large or small to talk about size. Words like tiny or minuscule describe very small things. Words like huge or enormous describe very big things. People with much more height than average may have gigantism. Some animals grow very large in the deep sea. This is called deep-sea gigantism. Other animals grow large on islands. This is known as island gigantism.

We use these words to help others picture the object.

Size is used in many places outside of science. In math, magnitude is the size of an abstract object. In computing, file size tells us how much space a file uses. Astronomers measure the brightness of stars on a scale. This is similar to how we measure the size of an earthquake. Even stories use the idea of size. A character might have a heart that is too small. This is a way to describe how they act. Size helps us understand the world and our place in it.
