Length

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Length is a way to measure distance. It tells us how far apart things are.

In the International System of Units, we call this the SI system. The base unit for length in this system is the metre. We often use length to describe the longest part of an object. However, the name can change depending on how an object sits. We use height for vertical length. We use width or breadth for shorter parts. Depth is used to measure a third dimension.

Measuring length works in different ways for different shapes. In math, we often measure along straight lines. We can also measure along curves, which is called arclength. For a rectangle, area is found by multiplying length by width. If you stand a rectangle up, you might call it height instead. Volume measures three dimensions, like a wooden plank. You find this by multiplying length, height, and depth.

We also use length to find the perimeter of a shape. This is the sum of all its sides. A circle has a boundary called a circumference.

Humans have needed to measure length for a very long time. People needed it when they stopped moving and started building. They used building materials and traded with neighbors. As trade grew, people needed standard units of length. Later, technology made measurement even more important. We need high accuracy for tiny micro-electronics. We even need it for measuring distances in space.

Many different units exist for different jobs. The metre is the main unit in the SI system. We also use millimetres, centimetres, and kilometres. In the United States, people use inches, feet, yards, and miles. Sailors use a special unit called a nautical mile. For huge distances in space, astronomers use light-years. They also use the astronomical unit and the parsec. For tiny things in physics, we use the fermi.

Length can even behave in surprising ways. Einstein's theory of special relativity changed how we think. He found that length is not always constant. A ruler might change size if it moves very fast. The length depends on the speed of the person watching. In computer science, length means something else. It is the number of characters in a string of text. It can also be the number of items in a list.
