Length

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Length is a way to measure distance. It tells us how far apart things are. Most people use the metre as a base unit. We call this the SI system.

We use different words for length. Height is used for vertical length. Width and breadth describe shorter parts. Depth is used for a third dimension. We use length to find area. Area measures two dimensions. We use volume for three dimensions.

People needed to measure things long ago. They used body parts or steps. They also used landmarks. Now, we need very high accuracy. This helps with tiny electronics and space travel.

In math, length can be a straight line. It can also be a curve. We call a curved length arclength. In space, we use big units. We use the light-year to measure distance. In science, we use tiny units too. One tiny unit is the fermi.

Length can even change. Einstein found that speed affects length. A ruler might change size if it moves fast. This is part of special relativity.
