It works by using a series of markings along an edge. These markings are often called "rules." Many rulers are also called a scale, a line gauge, or a meter stick. Most rulers are rigid and straight. This makes them a "ruled straightedge." You can use the straight edge to draw very straight lines.

Rulers are important for math, geography, and geometry.

There are many different ways a ruler can work. Some rulers are short so they can fit in a pocket. Other rulers are much longer, like a yardstick or a meter stick.

Some people use a tape measure for large jobs. You might also see a surveyor's wheel or a laser rangefinder used for big distances. In geometry, a ruler helps you draw straight lines between two points. You can also use a ruler and a compass together. This helps you do special math tasks, like dividing an angle into two equal parts.

People have been using rulers for a very long time. They have been around since at least 2650 BC.

In the past, people used their own bodies to measure things. They used the length of a hand, a foot, or a cubit. These measurements changed depending on where a person lived. In the late 18th century, the metric system began to be used. Most countries in the world use this system today.

History shows us many amazing old tools. The oldest measuring rod found is a copper-alloy bar. It dates back to 2650 BC and was found in the city of Nippur.

The Indus Valley civilization used rulers made of ivory before 1500 BC. One ruler found at Lothal in 2400 BC was very accurate. In 1851, Anton Ullrich invented a folding ruler. Later, in 1902, Frank Hunt made a flexible ruler.

Different materials make different kinds of rulers. Most were made of wood in the past, but now we use plastic too.

Some rulers are made of metal for use in workshops. Metal is very durable and stays strong. Some rulers even have a raised metal edge. This helps when you are cutting or drawing with a pen. You might also see a French curve. This is a rigid tool used to draw smooth, curved lines.
