A drawing board is a special kind of desk for making plans.

People use them to draw with ink or pencils. They can also read very large books on these surfaces. Architects use them to make precise technical drawings. Engineers use them to make detailed plans too. These desks help people create very accurate work. They are very important tools for many different jobs.

There are many ways to make a drawing work. In the 18th and 19th centuries, people dampened their paper first. They then glued the edges of the paper to the board. Once the paper dried, it became very flat and smooth.

Today, people use different ways to hold paper down. Some use self-adhesive drafting tape or small adhesive dots. Other boards are magnetized to hold steel strips in place. You might even use drawing pins or C-clamps to keep paper still.

Drawing tables have changed a lot over many years. Long ago, they were often made of fine woods and brass. They were common in private libraries and offices. During the Industrial Revolution, they became more utilitarian. This means they were built more for work than for looks.

Instead of wood, new tables were built with steel and plastic. This made them stronger and easier to move around.

Modern drafting tables use many clever parts to work well. Most have a steel frame for strength. The surface is often a thick sheet of compressed fibreboard.

A thin vinyl sheet called a board cover protects the surface. This cover lets you use tools like a compass without damage. Many tables use a foot pedal to change the angle. A heavy weight filled with lead shot keeps the board safe. This weight stops the board from snapping up if you release the pedal.

Many tools can attach to a drawing board to help. A drafting machine can help a person measure things accurately. Some tables even use electric motors to move the surface. You can just push a button to change the height. You might have heard the phrase "back to the drawing board."

This phrase comes from a cartoon in 1941. It means a plan failed and you must start over. Even with computers, many people still love using these boards.
