A drafting machine is a very helpful tool for technical drawing.

It helps people draw lines that are perfectly straight and accurate. The machine uses a pair of scales. These scales meet at a right angle to form an L-shape. This shape sits on a protractor head. A protractor is a tool used to measure angles. This head can move freely across a drawing board. It uses two guides to move in different directions.

This tool works in a very smooth way. The protractor head slides on two guides. These guides are attached to the drawing board. One guide helps the head move up and down. The other guide helps it move side to side. You can lock these guides by themselves. This keeps the tool in the right place. The machine can also draw many different types of lines. It can make parallel lines or lines at a set angle.

Charles H. Little invented the drafting machine in 1901. He received a U.S. Patent for it that year. Little started the Universal Drafting Machine Company in Cleveland, Ohio. He wanted to make and sell these tools. By the 1920s, design offices in Europe used them. Some records say they were in Italy by 1913. Other sources say they were introduced in 1930.

Older versions of the machine worked in unique ways. They used a pantograph system to keep the head steady. This system kept the angle the same as it moved. The arms were balanced with springs or counterweights. Most machines sit on a smooth drawing board. You can tilt the board from flat to vertical. This makes drawing very convenient for the user. Some special boards are double-sized for A0 drawings. Some boards even have lights inside to help with copying.

Drafting machines changed how people design things. Before them, people used many separate tools. They had to use a ruler, a square, and a protractor. The machine puts these parts together in one tool. Today, we use computers for this kind of work. This is called computer-aided design, or CAD. Computers and large printers have replaced many drafting machines.
