In medical or scientific settings, they are often called forceps. These instruments help doctors and scientists work with precision. They are very important for many different kinds of jobs.

Most tweezers work using a simple way it works called spring tension. This tension keeps the grasping ends apart by default. When you squeeze the tool, you apply pressure to bring the ends together.

Most people hold them in a pen grip. You place them between your thumb and index finger. This grip lets you control how much pressure you use. You can also release a small object very quickly.

Gold tweezers were found in the Royal Cemetery of Ur in Iraq. These date back to between 2550 and 2450 B.C. In Mesopotamia and Ancient India, people used Asiatic tweezers around 3000 B.C. These were made of two metal strips brazed together. In the 17th century, people in England called them a Volfella or a Puller. The word tweezer likely comes from the French word étui, which means a small case.

There are many different shapes of tweezers for different tasks.

There are also cross-locking tweezers that work in reverse. These tools actually open when you squeeze them. They close automatically when you let go. This helps them hold an item without any extra finger work.

Today, we see tweezers used in many parts of our lives. People use eyebrow tweezers to pluck hair from their faces. Stamp collectors use stamp tongs with smooth jaws to protect postage stamps.
