Scissors are handy tools used to divide materials.

They consist of two sharp blades that pivot around a center point. When you squeeze the handles, the blades slide firmly against each other. This motion uses both cutting and shearing to split the material. You might use them on paper, cloth, or even thin wire.

Choosing the right tool is very important for the job. Using the wrong kind can damage your materials or the tool itself.

Different tasks require very specific designs. For example, hair-cutting shears have special blade angles for thick bundles of hair. If you use regular scissors, you might cause split ends. Kitchen scissors are built to trim tough foods like meat or bone.

Doctors use surgical scissors to work on body tissues during operations. Some heavy-duty tools are called shears, like those used for pruning grass. Even larger tools, like hedge trimmers, use a similar idea. Some scissors even have a spring to help the handles open back up.

People have been making these tools for a very long time. Some shears found in Turkey date back to the 2nd century AD. In China, the Hangzhou Zhang Xiaoquan Company has made scissors since 1663.

A man named Robert Hinchliffe changed things in 1761. He lived in Sheffield and made the first modern scissors from hardened steel. It was a hard job to make the handles. He had to drill holes and file away metal so fingers could fit. He became a famous manufacturer with strong sales in London.

Today, different parts of the world specialize in making scissors. China is the biggest maker in the world. In 2019, China was responsible for 64.3% of all global scissors exports.

Germany is also famous for its blades. The city of Solingen has been a center for making them since medieval times. In Japan, the city of Seki used to make swords. Later, blacksmiths there began making scissors and knives instead. In Italy, the town of Premana has many companies that make scissors for the whole world.

Most people use right-handed scissors every day. However, left-handed people need special tools too. Some left-handed scissors only have different finger grips.

These are often called "semi" left-handed scissors. "True" left-handed scissors are different because the blades are also reversed. They look like mirror images of regular scissors. This helps the user see exactly where they are cutting. Whether they are cheap or very expensive, scissors are a vital part of our daily lives.
