A retractor is a very helpful tool used during surgery.

It works by pulling back the edges of a wound. This action is called tissue retraction. Doctors use it to move organs or tissues out of the way. This lets them see and reach body parts underneath. Without these tools, it would be hard to see deep inside. It makes a hard job much easier for the surgical team.

There are many different ways these tools work. Some are simple steel tools with curved or hooked blades. A person must hold these by hand to keep them in place. Other tools are more complex and can be clamped to a table. Some even attach to a robotic arm for help. There are also self-retaining retractors that stay in place on their own. They use springs, gears, or ratchets to hold their position.

These tools have a very long history. People likely used branches or antlers in the Stone Age. They used these to dig for food. Later, metal tools were made to help with butchering or dissection. Archaeologists found Roman metal hooks and retractors. In the 4th century CE, an Indian physician named Susruta used them. In the 1000s, Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi described many tools in his text. Vesalius also described them in the 16th century.

Many special tools have been made over time. Jan Mikulicz-Radecki invented a hinged rib spreader in 1904. This led to many new designs in the early 20th century. In 1936, a modern device was made based on Enrique Finochietto's design. Some tools are even built for specific body parts. For spinal surgery, some retractors have lights and suction. These keep the area bright and dry. In 2021, a ring retractor in the UK won a special award.

Retractors help a surgeon do their best work. Surgical assistants help hold them during a procedure. These assistants can be trained nurses or other doctors. Some tools, like the rib spreader, are used to push tissues apart forcefully. Others, like the ribbon retractor, can be bent into any shape. This variety ensures every surgery has the right tool. It is amazing how a simple metal tool can help save lives.
