A brush is a very basic and useful tool. It usually has a handle or a block. To this block, many tiny filaments are attached. These filaments are often called bristles.

Because they are so versatile, a single home might have dozens of different kinds.

There are many ways to make a brush work. One common way is called tufting. In this process, a hole is drilled into the brush base. A special tool then inserts bundles of bristles into that hole. A staple or an anchor holds the bristles firmly in place.

Another method is called epoxy-set. This uses a strong resin to seal the bristles. This method is very important for cleanrooms or food factories. It stops bacteria from hiding in small gaps. This keeps the tools very safe for use.

Brushes have a very long history. The very first brushes were just branches from shrubs used to sweep dirt. Around 3500 BC, the Egyptians made early paint brushes. They used split palm leaves and animal hair. They tied these to tree branches to make handles. They used them to decorate pottery and walls in tombs. At the same time, China was also developing its own brushes. The Huzhou ink brush became a famous tool for writing.

Many important inventions changed how we make brushes. In the 1700s, William Addis created the first mass-produced toothbrush. He drilled holes into a material to secure the bristles with glue. Later, makers began using metal ferrules. A ferrule is a metal tube that holds the bristles to the handle. Using metal made brushes much more durable. In the 1850s, the first machines for drilling handles were patented. By 1859, the first brush factory in America opened in New York.

Today, the material of the bristles is very important. Different jobs need different types of filaments. Nylon is great for cleaning because it is tough. Polyester is used when a brush should not soak up water. Some brushes use metal wires like steel or brass to remove rust. Others use animal hairs like hog or goat hair for smooth painting.

Scientists even test how well a bristle can bend and return to its shape. This helps them know how long the brush will last.
