Brushes have been around for a very long time. Long ago, people used branches from shrubs to sweep dirt. Later, Egyptians tied palm leaves and animal hair to sticks. Around the same time, people in China also made brushes.

Making brushes has changed over the years. In the 1700s, William Addis made the first mass-produced toothbrush. He drilled holes to hold the bristles in place. Later, makers began using metal parts called ferrules. A ferrule is a metal tube that holds the bristles to the handle. This made brushes stronger and helped them keep their shape.

Today, machines make many kinds of brushes. Some use a way called tufting. This is when a machine puts bundles of hair into a base. Other brushes use epoxy, which is a type of strong glue. This keeps the bristles very secure.
