It is a type of brush with a long handle. This handle is usually a round, cylindrical stick. Attached to the bottom are stiff fibers called bristles. These bristles are often made from plants like broom corn. Some modern brooms use plastic or nylon instead. Brooms help us move dust and ash. They are used in homes, businesses, and even outdoors.

Brooms work in different ways depending on their stiffness. Soft brooms are used to sweep cobwebs from walls. Hard brooms are for much rougher tasks. You might use a hard broom to sweep dirt off a concrete sidewalk. Most brooms are somewhere in the middle. They are soft enough to move light dust. However, they are stiff enough to give a firm sweeping action. Some special brooms, like warehouse brooms, use heavy fibers like rattan. These are meant for surfaces like railroads or decks.

People have used tools like this for a very long time. The history of the broom goes back to Mesopotamia around 4000 B.C. Early versions were made from branches tied together with herbs. At first, they were short and had no handles. Over time, people added a stick to make them easier to use. In the past, people used bird wings or bone handles. Indigenous people in the United States used yucca plants for brooms. People in Saint Lucia used coconut fronds to clean near fires.

Making brooms changed a lot in the late 1700s. In 1797, a farmer named Levi Dickenson made a broom for his wife. He used the tassels from a grain called sorghum. His wife told many people about his good brooms. This created a huge demand for them. Later, machines were built to make brooms much faster. In 1810, the foot treadle broom machine was invented. This machine was a big part of the Industrial Revolution. In the United States, the number of broom factories grew quickly. There were 303 factories by 1839, and it peaked at 1,039 in 1919.

Brooms also appear in many stories and symbols. In old stories, a broom is sometimes called a besom. Some legends say witches fly on broomsticks. This idea appears in movies like The Wizard of Oz. In that film, the Wicked Witch of the West flies on a broom. Brooms also appear in the Harry Potter books. In that world, people use brooms to fly and play a game called Quidditch.
