They are often called by other names like a cudgel or a baton. Most clubs are small enough to swing with one hand. However, larger clubs may require two hands to be effective. These tools can cause blunt-force trauma, which is a type of injury from a heavy strike.

Clubs work by using weight and motion to strike a target. A user swings the club to deliver a blow. Some clubs have special parts to change how they work. An Aklys has a leather thong to help the user catch it after a swing. A ball club has a rounded head that moves on a wooden handle.

A kiyoga is a spring baton that extends when you swing it. This allows the tool to reach around a block to strike a target. Some clubs, like the jutte, use a hook to disarm someone safely.

History shows that humans have used clubs for thousands of years. In Kenya, a site called Nataruk shows evidence of a conflict 10,000 years ago. During the Middle Ages, peasants carried stout sticks called cudgels. These worked as walking staffs and tools for self-defense. In the 18th century, people even practiced a sport called singlesticking. This used a single-handed stick to train for sword fighting. Even the Roman Empire used specialized clubs like the Aklys.

Many different types of clubs exist around the world. The military mace is a metal version with a spiked or knobbed head. In Japan, samurai used kanabō, which were made of wood or iron with studs. Native Americans used stone or wooden ball clubs. The Māori people used a short, broad club called a mere.

In China, the Bian was a tubular club used by infantry. Some clubs, like the Oslop from Russia, were very heavy and made of iron.

We see the idea of the club in many places today. Law enforcement officers often use a baton or truncheon to keep order. They may also use a small, flexible club called a blackjack. You might even see a baseball bat used as an improvised club. Some clubs are also used in ceremonies to show authority. Even in nature, some animals have parts that look like clubs. For example, the Ankylosaurus was an armored dinosaur with a club-like tail.
