A throwing knife is a special tool made for tossing.

It is not the same as an ordinary knife. These knives are built with a specific weight. This helps them fly well through the air. People around the world have used them for many things. Some people use them for sport today. Others use them in sideshow acts. They are a very interesting part of human history.

Most throwing knives have two main parts. The first part is the blade. This is the sharp half of the tool. The second part is called the grip. The grip is not sharp. It lets the user hold the knife safely. It also helps balance the weight of the blade.

Some knives have weights that can slide. This lets you change how the knife feels.

How a knife flies depends on its balance. A balanced knife has its center of gravity in the middle. The center of gravity is the point where weight is even. This makes the path through the air easy to predict.

You can hold a balanced knife by the handle or the point. Unbalanced knives are harder to predict in flight. You usually hold the lighter end of an unbalanced knife. Heavy knives stay stable but need more strength to throw. Light knives are easy to throw but might bounce back.

Many different cultures have used these tools.

In central Africa, they were used for hunting and warfare. These knives had many iron blades. They had names like mambele, kulbeda, or trombash. Some might have started in central Sudan around 1000 AD. Other people think they appear in Libyan art from 1350 BC. Many museums in Europe and America hold these collections now.

We can see these tools in old books about fighting.

Hans Talhoffer wrote about spiked daggers for throwing. He lived around the years 1410 to 1482. Later, Paulus Hector Mair wrote about throwing daggers too. He lived from 1517 to 1579. He described throwing a dagger at an opponent's chest. These old writings help us learn how people used weapons. They show how much skill it takes to throw well.
