Most daggers have one or two sharp edges. Some daggers might even have no cutting edge at all. A famous example is the stiletto from the Renaissance. Many daggers also feature a crossguard. This is a piece of metal that keeps your hand from sliding forward onto the sharp blade.

Because they are weapons, many places have laws about them. These laws might limit how people can own or carry them.

How a dagger works depends on its specific shape. Some daggers are made to cut along their edges. Others are made only for thrusting through a target.

For example, the European rondel dagger is a type of thrusting knife. The Afghan pesh-kabz is another kind of knife used for this. In the last hundred years, most daggers have a short blade. They usually have a sharp, tapered point. They might also have a central spine or a fuller. A fuller is a groove that runs down the middle of the blade.

People have used daggers throughout all of human history. In the Neolithic times, the very first daggers were made from bone, ivory, or flint.
