A sword is a tool built for cutting or thrusting.

It has a long blade attached to a handle called a hilt. The blade can be straight or it can be curved. A thrusting sword usually has a straight blade and a sharp point. This design helps it poke into a target quickly. A slashing sword often has a curved blade with a sharp edge. Many swords are built to do both jobs well.

How a sword works depends on its specific shape. A thrusting sword like a rapier is light and very balanced. These are easy to move quickly during a duel. They are not very good for chopping or slashing motions. A slashing sword like a sabre is built much more heavily. These blades are often used in warfare or from horseback. The weight is often balanced toward the front of the blade. This helps the user chop through targets with more force.

Swords have a very long history that began in the Bronze Age. They grew slowly from smaller tools like knives and daggers. The first true swords appeared around 3300 BC in Arslantepe, Turkey. These early blades were made from arsenical bronze. In the Bronze Age, makers used copper and bronze to make leaf-shaped blades. Making long blades was hard because bronze is not very stiff. Long bronze blades could bend easily during use.

Different cultures created amazing ways to make metal blades. In China, makers used high tin bronze to make very hard edges. They even used diamond patterns on some blades. In India, people developed high-carbon steel around the mid-1st millennium BC. This special steel eventually became known as Damascus steel. The Roman army used a sword called the spatha. This long sword was the ancestor of the European longsword.

We can still see the influence of swords in our world today. Using a sword is called swordsmanship. In a modern context, we call this sport fencing. Some swords were even used as tools in recent history. For example, the US Navy M1917 Cutlass was used in World War I. During the Pacific War, some Marines used a version as a jungle machete.

Even though they are old, these tools shaped how people fought for thousands of years.
